St. Anton am Arlberg
The village
St. Anton is Austria's premier ski resort and ranks among the top five resorts for truly challenging skiing. St. Anton is renowned for its extensive, challenging skiing and snowboarding, and its even more extreme and vibrant nightlife. This Austrian resort will appeal to everyone, but it holds the greatest attraction for competent skiers and snowboarders with an appetite for challenging mountains and non-stop nightlife. The resort retains its traditional Austrian charm, with a long, pedestrianised main street full of attractive and traditional buildings. This street is the focus of the action; the best bars, clubs and most of the restaurants are located here, and the main ski lifts are only a minute's walk away.
The ski area
St Anton provides 276km of pistes and 174km of backcountry runs to get your teeth into. What's more, the snowfall (and superb snowmaking facilities) in St. Anton is usually sufficient to maintain the slopes up to the end of April. The skiing in St. Anton is superb. Beginners are the only level of group who do not have ideal conditions; once you have conquered the nursery slopes there are few obvious runs to progress to. The standard of the pistes in St. Anton is high and when you are exploring the on-piste terrain you should remember that a red run in St. Anton may be trickier than a red run in other parts of Europe. The backcountry freeride routes in St. Anton are also infamous and attract a number of the World's best skiers and snowboarders. St. Anton is situated close to the other popular Austrian resorts of Lech, Zürs and St. Christoph. Lech is also worth a visit, the beautiful buildings and wide cruisy slopes make it clear why Lech is such a favourite with British and Scandinavian.
